Biography

A voice beyond categories.

Morris Northcutt is an international trumpet soloist, recording artist, and educator whose work brings classical, jazz, and Latin American traditions into conversation. His musical life moves between the concert stage, the recording studio, and the classroom, connected by an expressive approach to sound and a curiosity about the stories music can tell.

The son of a Korean immigrant, Morris brings a personal understanding of cultural connection to his work. His recordings and collaborations reflect that perspective, exploring music across borders while keeping melody and lyrical expression at the center.

His performance experience includes an appearance as soloist with the Miami Symphony Orchestra and work with musicians across the Americas and Europe. Whether performing with a large ensemble or recording with a small group, he approaches music as a shared exchange between artists and listeners.

The recorded voice

Music that travels.

His albums Tonada (2021) and Moliendo Café (2024) explore Venezuelan musical traditions through collaborations with musicians including arranger and producer Justo Morao. The projects bring together folk melodies, classical phrasing, and jazz influences, with collaborators including trombonist Domingo Pagliuca and cuatro player Edward Ramírez.

His 2026 chamber recording Secret Garden turns toward a more intimate landscape: music as a place of healing, hope, and renewal after loss. Collaborations with Davide Perico and contributions to film and video game scores extend his work into other musical settings.

Connection beyond the stage.

Teaching is an essential part of Morris’s artistic life. His clinics and presentations have included the International Trumpet Guild and the Rafael Méndez International Brass Festival. During his 2026 visit to Brazil, he worked with students and musicians in São Paulo through masterclasses, rehearsals, and performance.

He has also shared his experience through interviews including Bob Reeves Brass’s The Other Side of the Bell. Across these settings, his work connects the practical craft of trumpet playing with the expressive purpose behind it.
